The MS290 is the number-one-selling chainsaw from a company who makes some of the finest cutting tools in the world. Now that’s saying a lot.

This Farm Boss chainsaw is designed for rugged use both in the yard and on the job site, making it a must-have tool for both professional workers and laymen homeowners alike.

If you’re on the lookout for one of the best chainsaws on the shelves today, you may need to look no further than this power chainsaw.

Stihl MS290 Farm Boss Chainsaw Review

The Farm Boss gets its name because it is a ruggedly-designed chainsaw that’s perfect for use on a farm. It’s capable of delivering the goods on a variety of heavy duty jobs–from trimming and pruning of yards trees, to clearing out stumps, to removing giant trees that have fallen over roads during winter storms.

This may not be the most powerful of the Stihl chainsaws out there, but it’s certainly near the top of the heap.

One of the best things about the Stihl MS290 is its energy and power. The 3.8 horsepower motor feels like it wants to run all day and all night, cutting up anything in its path. The stamina of this machine is unbelievable, and you may not ever have to replace it.

If there’s anything bad to say about this chainsaw, it’s that it takes a bit of effort sometimes to get it going. Without the decompression valve startup, you may be looking at a good 4 to 5 pulls on the start cord to rev up the motor.

You’ll also want to keep in mind that going directly from the highest setting to idle can cause the MS290 to stall. If you take care not to drop it down so fast, you can avoid a lot of annoying restarts.

Stihl MS290 Farm Boss Specifications

To give you an idea of the ins and outs of this particular chainsaw model, let’s take a look at the facts and figures of its design and performance:

  • Weight: 13 pounds
  • Fuel Facility: 19 ounces

MS290 Stihl Chainsaws: The Final Verdict

The fact that the MS290 Farm Boss is the world’s bestselling chainsaw should tell you that it’s a good one to own. This is a versatile machine with a great number of advantages (including sheer power and stamina) that will work hard for you as long you take care of it.

One the other hand, the startups can take too much effort and if you’re not careful, you can be dealing with a lot of stalls and restarts.

In the end, though, the energy and vitality of the Farm Boss well compensates for any minor issues you may have with its performance.

The only real harm this chainsaw will do is to your wallet.

A new Stihl 290 price tag can run around $700. This may be an immediate turn-off for those of you on a fixed budget. If so, consider the MS250 (less than $300) or the MS170 (less than $200). Both of these chainsaws are less powerful than the Farm Boss, but they still work hard to get your simple projects done.

If, however, you do have the money to spend on a superbly crafted machine, take the time to further explore this Stihl chainsaw. You’ll surely find that it’s everything you could want in a chainsaw. And then some.

“A new Stihl 290 price tag can run around $700.” – This is either a misprint, or just entirely inaccurate. I have found, depending on bar length, brand new MS-290s run about $360 – $400 before tax. This is from a variety of Stihl dealers in the Midwest, as of Spring 2012. Anyone who has paid ~ $700 for this saw has been seriously gouged.
