Need one of Stihl’s most powerful chainsaws? Read this Stihl MS 200 chainsaw review & learn why professionals rely on the Stihl MS200T chainsaw.

Geared for professional arborists and homeowners with frequent need of chainsaw use, the Stihl MS 200 is a high-powered machine in a lightweight body.

Stihl is a company that gets a great deal of satisfaction from being the best in the business. They make a large variety of chainsaws, suited to every need and consumer, and just about every one of them is sitting at the top of its class.

The Stihl MS 200 may not be the cream of Stihl’s expansive crop, but it sure does stand head and shoulders above the competition from other name brands.

Stihl MS 200 Chainsaw: Review

One of the best things about the Stihl MS 200 is its construction. This is a heavy duty chainsaw capable of cutting through some seriously dense trees all day and all night, and it comes in a body that weighs less than eight pounds.

The MS 200 T is a fantastically well balanced machine that enjoys the same incredible durability as its chainsaw forebears from Stihl. Its direct ancestor is the 020 T, a classic workhorse from the 1970s, and several improvements have been made both in design and performance. For one thing, the MS 200 T is more than 20% lighter than the 020, giving it a portability of which other models in its class can be envious.

On the downside, the Stihl MS 200 T can only support a bar of up to 16 inches in length.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing (it can still cut down a tree that is one foot in diameter with ease), but it makes it more difficult to fell larger trees and can grow tiresome in your arms if you’re having to reach high for unruly branches.

But perhaps the biggest deterrent to buying the Stihl MS 200 is the price. At almost $600, this model is a good deal more expensive than many of Stihl’s other products.

Stihl MS200T Chainsaw: A Look at the Specs

Take a peek at some of the Stihl MS 200′s specifications and see if they match up with your needs and requirements:

  • Displacement: 35.2 cc
  • Engine: 2.3 horsepower, 1.7 kW
  • Weight: 7.7 pounds
  • Fuel Facility: 12 ½ ounces
  • Chain Width: 3/8″
  • Bar Length: 12″ to 16″

Other features of this quad power chainsaw include: IntelliCarb compensating carburetor, tool-less fuel and oil clamps, shock-absorbing ElastoStart starter handle, side-accessible chain tensioner, and adjustable automatic bar.

Stihl MS 200: The Bottom Line

It’s hard to come to a straight conclusion about whether or not you should buy this Stihl chainsaw model.

The positives are truly great:

  • Lightweight Design
  • Durable Construction
  • Well Balanced Performance

But the negatives leave much to be desired:

  • Bar Too Small (especially for Professional Arborist Chainsaw label)
  • Far Too Expensive

In the end it will be up to you to decide which chainsaw (Stihl or otherwise) is right for you. If you choose this Stihl MS 200 machine, rest easy in knowing that you’ve bought a great chainsaw that will work hard for you as long as you take care of it.

However, a lot of consumers (this reviewer included) think that there are other Stihl chainsaws that have even higher performances–with more power and longer bars–that are better worth your money.

This is the top of the line t-handle saw. many have tried to compete with it. this saw is the standard that others try, i emphasize TRY, to manufacture as a t-handle design. only a 16″ bar? put a 16″ bar and try to cut something with it on another manufacturers model. the title professional arborist saw is absolutely 100% true, and the only one at that. if you need a bigger bar then get a more power saw its that simple, you cant degrade this saw for only having a 16″ bar, its not made for a bigger bar. its made for the arborist. check out what an arborist does before you downgrade its title.

I own the 192T stihl t-handle saw, have been useing it for 3 years now. It is the best, bar none!
I wish I had bought one sooner. I have owned 6 stihl saws before buying this one. If you cut firewood you won’t know how you went so long without one!! I’m researching saws because I’m going to get a 201T stihl. You get what you pay for……

I’m a small lady climber, my 200T made it possible to compete with the big boys. Love my saw!!!
Easy maintenance too. Saw was big enough for my needs and still small enough to take to Jamaica,
liked everything about it. Retired now but still got it, hard to part with because it’s sooo good. Safe climbing!
