Stihl Chainsaws: Looking Back

The original base of operations for Stihl (pronounced steel) is located in Waiblingen, Germany. They opened their doors for business in 1926 and quickly became the world’s bestselling manufacturer of chainsaws and other powerful tools.

The company was founded by Andreas Stihl, an early mastermind in the production of chain saw technology, and it has been owned by his descendants ever since.

After World War II, there was a great demand for power tool equipment. Land was being bought and sold in great quantities and suburban communities were sprouting up all over the country. This home-building furor called for specific tools to meet its needs. One such tool was the chainsaw. This could be used not just for clearing away large stretches of woodland but also for landscaping and material cutting.

Another post-war benefit for the Stihl company was the cheap price of high grade aluminum. They were able to purchase the materials needed to create their wares at low rates and manufacture them quickly.

In 1974, Stihl Incorporated was introduced to the United States. This American branch of the company was set up in Virginia Beach and employs approximately 2,000 people at its 1,000,000+ square foot complex.

This is also one of the only manufacturers of chainsaws that make their own saw chains and guide bars. Consequently, Stihl chainsaw parts are incredibly reliable.

Stihl started as a family business and continues to be one, always serving up the finest products and never taking the easy way out (like using cheap materials for high priced goods).

Stihl Chainsaws: In the Public Eye

Stihl is the bestselling manufacturer of chainsaws and other power tools for a number of reasons, a few of which include:

  • Family Business – People, especially nowadays, tend to trust family-operated businesses more than large corporate entities. Perhaps this is because there’s a face to the name. Or maybe it’s because people have become so jaded with companies making millions of dollars for CEOs who don’t seem to really have anything to do with their businesses at all.. Stihl is a family name, not a faceless corporation, and it has always been the American dream (and worldwide dream, too) to be a success with something you’ve created from scratch.
  •

  • High Quality Power Tools – One of the more obvious reasons for Stihl’s continued success is the superiority of the products they manufacture. When people think of chainsaws, they think of the name Stihl. This is a testament not just to great marketing, but to the fact they have continued to make the best performing tools for almost a century.
  •

  • Fair Prices – A company like Stihl can afford to sell their goods at exorbitant prices because they have such a recognizable brand name. But Stihl, seeing that it would be detrimental both to their brand and their profit if they did so, has continued to offer chainsaws, blowers, and trimmers at extraordinarily reasonable prices.
  •

  • Modernization – A lot of family businesses, especially those that were founded in the early twentieth century, have had problems keeping up with the times. Large corporate entities are always looking for ways to appeal to younger crowds or jump on the latest technologies, while smaller companies sometimes never take that risk.

Stihl has kept up with the times, offering a state of the art corporate website that allows them to distribute product information internationally and sell to anyone with a computer.

The reasons that Stihl has continued to be such a success in the power tool market are many and varied. They have modernized their operation without losing the family name reputation, and they have kept their Stihl chain saw prices low even when creating some of the highest quality products on the market.

Stihl Chainsaws: Reviews of Best Stihl Chainsaws

Let’s take a closer look at some of the specific Stihl chainsaws available to give you a better idea of what this fine company has to offer.

  • Stihl MS 180 – The best benefits of choosing this product over another are that it’s incredibly easy to start, you can adjust the chain without tools, the safety features are commendable, and there’s an automatic oiling system in place. The fourteen inch saw is excellent for home use.
  •

  • Stihl MS 290 – This is perhaps the most popular model of Stihl chainsaws on sale today. Weighing 13 pounds with a 56.5 cc engine, this chainsaw is one of the strongest of the Stihl line, designed for rugged farm use. The 290 comes equipped with a side access chain tensioner, a built-in winter/summer shutter, an anti-vibration system, and an IntelliCarb compensating carburetor. Consumer reviews for this Stihl Farm Boss are off the charts, with one of the only weaknesses being that it can do everything except make your breakfast for you.
  •

  • Stihl MS 390 – One of the best mid-size chainsaws available, the Stihl MS 390 is a sixteen inch tool that features a state of the art decompression valve to make for a quick startup. And to add years to its lifespan, this chainsaw has shields for an inboard-mounted clutch and chain brake housing, keeping the dirt at bay.
